Do you want to have a baby? Actually, it is not really important if the answer to this question is yes or no, because in each case the important thing is to calculate your fertile days so you can plan (or prevent) getting pregnant.
The fertile days are part of the menstrual cycle of women and are actually the days when women have the greatest chance of becoming pregnant. This is because during these days, the egg leaves the ovary (a process called ovulation) and travels through the fallopian tubes and if it meets semen in this way, it can be fertilized.
The egg lives from 10 to 24 hours, while sperm can live in the female body for up to 5 days. It is considered that fertile days begin 2 to 3 days before and end 2 to 3 days after ovulation (i.e. 10-18 day of the 28-day cycle). It should be clear that this method of calculating fertile days has low accuracy.
However, if you consider the estimated time frame when having intercourse, you can increase (or decrease) your chances of pregnancy. There are actually 3 ways in which you can calculate your fertile days and in each of them, you need to make sure that the first day of the cycle is the day when your menstruation began.
This is a suitable method for women that have regular menstruation i.e. a cycle on average 28 days. This means that the ovulation happens on the 14th day before the next cycle starts, which in turn means that the fertile days are approximately from the 13th to the 15th day of the current cycle.
But if we consider the fact that sperm can live in the genital tract for up to 72 hours, then the fertile days can begin on the 11th day of the cycle. There is also a possibility of delayed ovulation, which means that the ovulation itself can last up to the 20th day of the cycle. According to these calculations, you have bigger chances of getting pregnant between the 11th and the 20th day of the cycle.

In order for your calculations to be more accurate, you need to follow your menstruation for a longer period of time (6-12 months) and track the changes you observe. This method is known as the Billings method and it is based on the mucus produced through the cervix. You should pay attention to its appearance, quantity and consistency, as well as pay attention to the moisture of the vagina.
If your vagina is dry after your period it means that your fertile days haven’t begun yet. If there is rare mucus, it means that your body is entering the phase of fertile days and after four days you will probably be dry again or notice a change in the discharge. After this phase, you can have sex and the chances of pregnancy will be less likely.
This method is called the thermal method because you need to regularly measure the temperature of your body i.e. the temperature in your vagina or mouth right after you wake up, in a period of 10 minutes. You should use the same thermometer in order to avoid possible errors. If you notice that your temperature is higher than usual and that lasts for the next 3 days, then it means that you are in ovulation. As we already mentioned above, these methods only determine the approximate fertile days and errors are possible.
In order to be 100% sure, there are special tests that you can buy in almost every supermarket or pharmacy. You can do these tests two times a day, so you can make sure that you won’t miss the day of ovulation. However, even you calculate the day when the egg is released for the ovaries, and even if the egg meets the sperm, the pregnancy is still not 100% guaranteed.
The probability of pregnancy is usually not bigger than 37% and unfortunately, ovulation does not occur in every cycle, even in young women. Nevertheless, if you want to have a baby, keep trying and don’t give up. If you don’t want to have a baby in this particular time of your life, calculate your fertile days and be careful.
